January 28, 2008

LAS VEGAS (Jan. 26) – Miss Michigan Kirsten Haglund, a 19-year-old aspiring Broadway star, was crowned Miss America 2008 on Saturday in a live show billed as the unveiling of the 87-year-old pageant’s new, hipper look.
Haglund, of Farmington Hills, Mich., sang “Over the Rainbow” and walked a crowd-pleasing strut in a black and gold bikini to clinch the title. She beat Miss Indiana Nicole Elizabeth Rash, the first runner up, and Miss Washington Elyse Umemoto, the second runner up for the $50,000 scholarship and year of travel that comes with the crown.Haglund, who studies music at the University of Cincinnati, grew up in a pageant family. Her mother is an active volunteer, and her grandmother Iora Hunt, competed for the crown as Miss Michigan 1944. Hunt joined Haglund at a news conference.”The only words that come to my mind is that this is a dream come true, not just for me but for my family as well,” Haglund said. “I’m not just standing up here alone.”Haglund, a cheery, classic blond, wore a revealing silver sequined dress and black bikini during the evening gown and swimsuit portions of the pageant. As her platform issue, she promised to advocate for awareness of eating disorders, an illness from which she has recovered.

Fight Night in Key West
January 14, 2008

KEY WEST, Florida Keys – In the 1930s, when he wasn’t writing, fishing or indulging at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, Ernest Hemingway often officiated boxing matches outside a small bordello near his Spanish colonial home on Whitehead Street.

That tradition is scheduled to return to Key West in a harborside series of bouts set for Friday, Jan. 18, at Mallory Square.

Dubbed “Fight Night in the Keys,” the seven-bout evening card is to feature a title fight and is slated for a live broadcast on ESPN 2’s “Friday Night Fights.”

“There is a very rich history of boxing in Key West,” said Si Stern, a Key West resident who manages several boxers. “When Hemingway lived here, there were a number of championship fights.”

Scheduled marquee events include Randall Bailey, a former two-time junior welterweight world champion, against Anthony Mora for the WBC Latin American Belt and Tarvis Simms versus a contender to be announced.

General admission tickets begin at $35 per person and cap at $165 per person for VIP seats that also includes parties and a pre-fight reception with hors d’oeuvres and cocktails.

Shayla Worley
January 13, 2008

Shayla Worley, 2006 American Cup Winner, on the National Team, and vying for a spot on the 2008 Olympic Team.
Shayla Worley first joined the gymnastics National team during the 2003-2004 season. She had her first major breakthrough in 2006, placing second in the All-Around at the American Cup competition. Today, nearly four years after joining the national team, Worley is vying for a spot on the 2007 World Championship Team and the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.

Last week, Worley took a few minutes out to tell about her day-to-day life. (USOT): Can you take me through what a normal day is like for you?

Shayla Worley: I wake up in the morning at about 5:45. I get ready and eat breakfast, and go to the gym from about 7-9. Then from the gym I change into my school clothes and I go to a public school from 9:30-1:15, which includes three periods and lunch. Then I go straight from school to gym at 1:45 to whenever I’m done with gym, which is usually around 7. After gym I ice and stuff, and then I go home, do some homework, eat some dinner, then go to bed.

USOT: What three classes do you take while you are at school?

Shayla Worley: At school I take Algebra 2, English 2 honors and Spanish 2 accelerated.

USOT: Which one is your favorite?

Shayla Worley: Spanish.

Q4: What’s a normal practice like for you?

Shayla Worley: In the morning we run stretch condition and do vault and either bars or beam. Always do vault, and then do a little bit of bars or beam. And maybe something like tumble track or tramp. And then in the afternoon we run, stretch and condition again, and we go to floor. We are on floor for about and hour, and then bars and beam each for about and hour and a half. Everything is like, we have an assignment and it’s just how long, we do the full assignment. It doesn’t matter how long it takes us. We just do the full assignment. After that, we are done.

USOT: Why did you originally get into gymnastics?

Shayla Worley: Originally I got into gymnastics because my older sister had started doing gymnastics, and I wanted to be just like her. I wanted to copy her and do everything like her. So as soon as I was old enough to start classes, I was at the gym, running around like crazy.
