Louie’s Backyard

Key West in the early 1900’s was a wealthy, rowdy town — where men lived close to the sea, where wrecking and sponging were major industries, and a brave man with a fast boat could easily make a fortune salvaging goods from ships wrecked by the whims of wind and wave.
Captain James Randall Adams was one such wrecker. Having made his fortune, he ordered the construction of a gracious Classic Revival Home on Waddell Street — the building that is now known as Louie’s Backyard. Captain Adams was fond of boasting that everything in his home, with it’s unusual two-story side porch and Doric columns was salvaged merchandise. The house stayed in the Adams family for years. It then changed owners several times before it was bought by Frances and Louie Signorelli, who opened the first Louie’s Backyard — a restaurant that seated twelve, had one lone waiter, and operated out of a cigar box.

The restaurant, growing quickly, soon became famous for it’s fine food and relaxed oceanfront ambiance — and for Ten Speed , the legendary mutt that sauntered up to the outdoor bar most afternoons for his customary cocktail of Kahlua and cream! Frequented by the likes of Jimmy Buffett and Tom McGuane , Louie’s Backyard received award after award for it’s superb cuisine.

Construction and renovation of the new Louie’s Backyard began in January, 1983 and it opened on December 27, 1983. The present owners, Phil Tenney and Pat Tenney, carry on the established tradition of dining excellence. The building has been lovingly renovated and enlarged, with special attention paid to maintaining it’s historical integrity. In fact, in June of 1984, Louie’s Backyard earned a place in the National Register of Historic Places . Open dining and cocktail decks leading down to the ocean let the diner at Louie’s experience the warm, heady atmosphere of Key West at it’s very best. It is this insistence on quality in service, as well as food, and an extensive wine list that has won so many friends for the new Louie’s Backyard.

Lunch regulars have told us “the Conch Fritters are the best in Key West. Dinner regulars praise the Conch Chowder and many fish dishes we serve.

Upstairs at Louie’s is a private dining room for groups of 20 to 40. This room is enclosed on two sides by french doors opening onto a balcony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. A theatre kitchen flanked by white columns and private bar complete this scene. This private dining room and theatre kitchen feature the same bill of fare as the main dining room.
